Explosions were heard near an Iranian military base, and multiple reports citing US officials said Israel struck Iran.
CNN, citing the semi-official FARS news channel, reported that the explosions were heard in the city of Ghahjaworstan, located near Isfahan, Iran. The Iranian news channel said that “the city of Ghahjaworstan is located near the Isfahan airport and the eighth fighter base of the Army Air Force.”
While there is still uncertainty about the reported explosions, multiple reports from ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NPR, citing US officials, say Israel has hit Iran. Tasnim, a news channel affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said there was no evidence of a foreign attack.
The US official who spoke to CNN said the hit target was non-nuclear.
Iran’s air defenses have been activated, Iranian state media said, and CNN, citing an airline spokesman on Iranian television, reported that all flights to Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz have been suspended.
The Israeli military, the US Department of Defense and the US Central Command did not respond to requests for comment on the matter from Business Insider.
The reported explosions and strikes come days after Iran’s unprecedented and large-scale attack on Israel last weekend, in which Tehran and its allies fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel. Nearly all the munitions were shot down by Israel and its partner forces in the region, including the US.
Israeli officials vowed earlier this week to retaliate for the attack, even as many of their Western partners urged restraint and warned that any action could provoke a wider military confrontation and plunge the Middle East further into violence .
Iranian officials in Tehran have said it will respond to any Israeli action against Iran and that the country’s response to any aggression will be at an “immediate and maximum level.”
