COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A city man is in custody, accused of shooting his alleged girlfriend outside a Colonial Heights apartment complex and driving away with their infant son.
Earnest Hakim Vines, 43, faces aggravated malicious wounding, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and recklessly endangering a child. He is being held at the Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County.
The incident happened around 7:15 p.m. at the Concord Avenue Apartments in the central part of the city. Police were initially called to reports of an altercation that escalated when shots were fired.
The victim was shot three times, including once in the head. She was first taken to Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg and then airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where she was last reported in critical condition.
Police allege Vines drove away from the apartments with the couple’s 3-year-old son after the shooting. Before he was caught, authorities said Vines dropped the child off at a relative’s home.
