Global IT outage hits government offices in North Carolina. Numerous RDU flights canceled or delayed.

The Triangle suffered a global computer outage on Friday as local and regional government systems were down and flights were canceled or delayed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

According to The New York Times, the outage appears to have been caused by a software update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm used by governments and businesses around the world.

Both the Department of Health and Human Services and the Division of Motor Vehicles say they have been affected. All DMV driver’s license offices are closed, as are all license plate offices, which are run by private contractors.

Meanwhile, airlines had cancelled 21 departing flights from RDU by 8 a.m. and another 45 departing flights had been delayed.

American Airlines reported that flights were back in operation as of 5 a.m., but delays and cancellations across all airlines are expected to continue throughout the day.

RDU officials urged people to check the status of their flight with their airline before going to the airport.
