Heading to the NFL Draft in Detroit? Officials say they have a thorough parking plan

(CBS DETROIT) – Preparing for the 2024 NFL Draft reaching the 11th hour. Now the city is preparing for one of the biggest sporting events.

As thousands of people pour into downtown Detroit, expect long lines and not much space, especially in terms of parking.

“I think some people are in for a bit of a surprise when they get here and find that many of the lots they normally park in are inaccessible or completely full,” said Sam Krassenstein, Detroit’s chief infrastructure officer.

With thousands estimated to trickle in this weekend, you can bet parking issues will be a concern. As we enter the 11th hour, parking is already sold out in some areas.

While some spaces cost as much as $100.

“You don’t have to spend $50-$70 on a parking spot. You have convenient options … at a very affordable price,” Krassenstein said.

According to the city, there won’t be much on-street parking available. Street parkers are not allowed to block crosswalks or fire hydrants. If so, they can be towed away.

“We’ve partnered with the River East garage. We have about 2,000 spaces there that people can book in advance for $15. And we’ll have shuttles running back and forth from the RenCen.”

The QLine also offers $5 park and ride services.

With so many people in the city, it’s a scammer’s paradise. Before parking, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel recommends asking for a receipt.

It is also encouraged to never give up your keys when going for valet unless you have confirmed the location if valet services are indeed offered. Nessel also wants people to be aware that others are handing out false parking tickets.

Before you pay it. It is advisable to consult the municipality’s website to confirm this.

“Every lot must have a published fee schedule, so we will have an inspector go out to make sure the parking remains legitimate,” Krassenstein said.

The city encourages visitors to download the Park Detroit or ParkWhiz apps. Both have precise openings for where you can park.
