Redlands Fire Station 262 is undergoing a major renovation, the first since the building opened in 1965, and some of the additions include making the station more gender-inclusive for future recruits.

The $2.37 million renovation started in April and is estimated to take six to eight months. The renovations will modernize the station’s infrastructure for operational efficiency and improve overall living conditions. In addition to the new sleeping and shower/toilet areas, there will be a new fitness room,

The goal is for the department to recruit people of all genders. Currently only men work at the station.

“This critical upgrade reflects the city’s commitment to inclusivity and creates a supportive environment. In addition, these improvements will improve overall living conditions, promoting a favorable environment for rest and recovery after demanding operations,” the Redlands Fire Department wrote on its Facebook page.

While the renovation was underway, fire personnel moved to the Carriage House in Prospect Park.

“We are always looking for the best and most qualified candidates, no matter who they are, and we make sure our stations have that flexibility,” said Capt. Ryan Gallagher, Redlands Fire Department.
