CHICAGO (CBS) – A second Illinois State Police trooper was injured this week after a crash on the Bishop Ford Freeway.
State police said around 10 p.m. Tuesday that the trooper was stopped on the left shoulder of southbound I-94 at the accident investigation scene in Cottage Grove with emergency lights activated. At that time, an Infiniti sedan attempted to change lanes into the left lane but lost control, hitting another vehicle and then the police car.
The soldier was taken to a hospital with injuries, ISP said.
The Infiniti driver, Shylyn J. Richmond, 25, of Lansing, Illinois, was charged with aggravated violation of Scott’s Law and issued citations for driving under the influence, driving while license revoked, speeding for conditions and multiple other vehicle code violations in Illinois.
It is the second Scott’s Law-related crash to occur in Chicago this week.
Another one Monday morning ISP trooper seriously injured after being hit by a car while responding to a crash on I-57. The driver in that crash is also facing charges, including violating Scott’s Law, and was issued a citation.
According to state police, ISP has experienced 22 Move Over Law-related accidents statewide, injuring 11 service members so far this year.
Scott’s Law requires all drivers to swerve when approaching an emergency vehicle or a vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated.
