Sheriff’s SWAT team at the scene of a standoff with a suspected armed suspect at Sacramento home

Authorities evacuated nearby residents Wednesday evening after officers surrounded a south Sacramento home where an armed suspect had holed up and refused to come out.

The incident occurred in the 7700 block of Southland Way in a residential area a few blocks south of Gerber Road in the Vineyard section of Sacramento County.

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene to assist California Highway Patrol officers with the incident, said spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team had responded to the incident along with other officers.

It was unclear what led to the standoff with authorities. A spokesperson for the CHP’s South Sacramento office was not immediately available to provide further details.

Shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office announced evacuations were underway, urging residents to avoid the area.
