The situation in the north of the Gaza Strip resembles a “dystopian horror movie” and has recently deteriorated, according to the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
During a recent visit, Jan Egeland drove through ‘endless areas of completely destroyed houses’. Despite this, people are still holding on, he told German news website Zeit Online.
Aid deliveries are often looted, says Egeland, who has seen this himself at the Kerem Shalom border crossing near the city of Rafah in the south of the coastal zone.
“Maybe a hundred guys were standing there with sticks, waiting to stop the trucks coming after us and jump on them,” he said.
Egeland’s comments published on Saturday come as Israeli forces continue their offensive against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.
A number of terrorists were killed, positions destroyed and weapons caches unearthed in Rafah and the Jabaliya and Beit Lahia refugee districts in the north, military officials said.
At least 35 people have been killed since Friday, according to Palestinian reports. The information provided by both parties could not initially be independently verified.
