Tehran on Saturday strongly condemned an attack on the Iranian consulate general in Aleppo after a rebel alliance captured parts of the Syrian city.
“We will take legal action against this act of terror,” said Ismail Baghai, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
The consul general and his staff were not injured in the attack and are in good condition, the spokesperson said, according to the ministry’s website.
Iran, Syria’s most important ally after Russia, has significantly expanded its military influence in recent years by establishing a land corridor through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon. Syria remains a crucial part of Iran’s Middle East strategy.
According to the ISNA news agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will visit Damascus on Sunday to discuss the situation in Aleppo with his Syrian counterpart.
He then travels to Ankara, where the ongoing Syrian civil war will also be on the agenda.
