According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, traffic on the highway between Macon and the Florida-Georgia state line is “higher than historical averages” as Floridians seek shelter from Hurricane Milton.
Northbound Interstate 75 has seen about 280% more traffic than normal, and Interstate 95 and 16 had 90% more traffic than normal around 8 a.m. Tuesday, GDOT said.
This traffic is more than four times as much as the average traffic on the highways.
Although traffic was still heavy Tuesday afternoon, it had slowed since Monday.
Northbound Interstate 75 had more than 340% more traffic than normal, and northbound Interstate 95 had about 260% more traffic than normal on Monday.
“The I-75 South Metro Express Lanes south of metro Atlanta will remain open to northbound traffic only through Tuesday to accommodate higher northbound traffic volumes of Floridians heeding local evacuation orders,” the GDOT said in a news release.

For free emergencies roadside assistance or to report an incident on the highway, call 511 and ask for a CHAMP or HERO operator.
Campers and RVs can park in Georgia State Parks. These motorists were advised to visit gastateparks.org/alerts for updates.
The GDOT crews were silent removing dirt of some roads since the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The agency urged motorists to move over a lane or slow down to make room for emergency vehicles.
