Tropical waves in the Caribbean have a small chance of developing, the hurricane center says

The National Hurricane Center on Tuesday began monitoring a tropical wave in the Caribbean that could develop into the next tropical depression or storm of the season.

The wave, located in the southeastern Caribbean and moving west, has produced disorganized showers and thunderstorms, according to the NHC’s 8 a.m. tropical outlook.

“Environmental conditions appear conducive to slow development once the wave reaches the western Caribbean late this week,” forecasters said.

Along its path, it may form near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, in the Caribbean or in the Gulf of Mexico.

The NHC gives it a 20% chance of forming in the next seven days.

If it develops into a tropical storm, it would be called Tropical Storm Beryl.

The first named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Alberto, dropped torrential rains over Mexico last week, while also causing storm surge along the Gulf Coast along Texas.
