The Broncos gave up multiple first-round picks to get quarterback Russell Wilson. It did not work.
Would they give up multiple first-round quarterbacks to get their next quarterback?
General Manager George Paton was asked Thursday how difficult it would be to merge a future first-round draft pick with this year’s first-rounder, considering they didn’t have a first-rounder in 2022 or 2023.
“I would just say if it’s a player that you think can change the landscape of your organization in the future, like a quarterback, then you should do whatever it takes to get him,” Paton said reporters. in the building you are aggressive and try to get him. It doesn’t mean you’re going to get it, but you’re trying. So we are open to everything. We are wide open.”
If there is consensus in the building, love in the building, then you are aggressive and you try to get him.
So if there’s a guy the Broncos like (more specifically, if there’s a guy head coach Sean Payton likes), look to see if he or she can try to move up. Especially since Payton came one spot from Patrick Mahomes in 2017.
It happened. Mahomes slipped to No. 11. Drew Brees was in the draft room. The Saints had to tell Brees that he might witness the selection of his successor.
And then the Chiefs moved from No. 27 to No. 10 and got Mahomes.
With the Vikings currently one spot ahead of the Broncos, could Payton be at risk of losing a man he loves again? Or would he go up and get it?
Payton desperately needs a quarterback. He needs someone who can run his offense the way he wants.
So who is that guy? And who would he potentially “love” enough to move up, even if that means investing next year’s first round?
Our guess, and it’s just a guess, is that the Broncos would do it for JJ McCarthy. Whether that guess is correct, and whether they can move up to get McCarthy, remains to be seen.
